The History of Metal Detectors

World War 1 - Metal Detector
World War 1 - Metal Detector

In the realm of treasure hunting, the metal detector stands as an emblem of modern ingenuity, captivating enthusiasts worldwide. Yet, its origin tells a tale of a tool crafted for a vastly different purpose. Journey with us through time as we explore the metamorphosis of metal detectors, from their nascent days to the cutting-edge innovations shaping today's treasure-hunting landscape.

A Bullet, a President, and Alexander Graham Bell (1881)

In 1881, the world witnessed the birth of one of the first metal detectors, conceived by none other than Alexander Graham Bell. Its mission? To extract a metal bullet lodged in the back of then-President James Garfield. A life-saving invention in theory, but limited technology of the time left it thwarted by the interference of the bed's metal springs.

The Early 1900s: Uncovering Landmines and Beyond

Advancements in the early 1900s saw metal detectors contributing to post-World War I efforts, uncovering unexploded landmines. These colossal machines, though effective, were complex and unwieldy. It wasn't until the 1920s that the more recognizable, modern metal detector began taking shape. Gerhard Fischer's pivotal discovery in 1925 paved the way for the first handheld device, making its debut for public recreational use in 1931.

Charles Garrett's Vision (1950s)

Enter the visionary Charles Garrett in the 1950s, dissatisfied with existing metal detectors' limitations. Seeking specificity and efficiency, he birthed the Beat Frequency Oscillator (BFO), eliminating oscillator drift and creating a more accurate and powerful device. The 1960s saw the advent of industrial metal detectors, assuming responsibilities we see mirrored in today's detectors, from airports to archaeological sites and recreational treasure hunts.
