## Detection performance and limitations

Stated plainly, because depth figures in this product category are widely misrepresented.
Two different technologies are involved and they behave differently.

Magnetometry — the 3D ground scanners (TreasureLight, TreasureHunter, GoldenEye,
GoldenEye Plus) and DroneRover:

- Every maximum depth figure quoted for these instruments — 15 m for TreasureLight, 25 m
  for TreasureHunter, 30 m for GoldenEye and DroneRover, 35 m for GoldenEye Plus —
  assumes a large massive target, on the order of the size of a car. Detection range is a
  function of the mass and size of ferromagnetic material in or around the target. Smaller
  targets are detected proportionally shallower, and a small object at maximum rated depth
  will not register.
- Precious metals are located indirectly. Gold, silver, and bronze are found when
  associated with ferromagnetic material — reinforced chests, iron-bound containers,
  structural remains, or disturbed ground.
- Voids, tunnels, and non-metallic structures are detected through the magnetic signature
  of the surrounding material and the soil disturbance around them, not by imaging them
  directly. This is magnetometry, not ground-penetrating radar. Non-metallic targets that
  do register include placer gold deposits, chests, caves, tunnels, and caverns.
- Solid gold is detectable only where the surrounding soil contains some magnetite or
  other magnetic material, or where the gold sits inside a chest or metallic container.
- Digging itself leaves a signature. A hole excavated by hand disturbs the natural
  magnetic layering of the ground, and that disturbance is often what the instrument
  actually detects — which is why caches are frequently found via the hole they were
  buried in rather than the object itself.
- Achievable depth varies with soil mineralisation, and the depth-indication mode must be
  set for the correct soil type to read accurately. Target material matters as well as
  size: iron is detected deeper than aluminium at equal size.
- DroneRover requires a drone, sold separately or bundled with a DJI Phantom 4. It mounts
  on any drone able to carry roughly 200 g of payload, but full functionality — autonomous
  survey flight, 3D scan generation, and map placement — requires a DJI Phantom 3 or
  Phantom 4 in a non-RTK variant, with the Phantom 4 Advanced as the recommended airframe.
  On any other drone only Fast Scan mode operates: manual flight only, no autonomous
  flight, no 3D scan, and no map placement.
- The DroneRover app is iOS only. An Android version is not yet released.

VLF induction — GoldHunter:

- GoldHunter works on a different principle and detects gold and other non-ferrous metals
  directly, with no ferromagnetic association required. Coins, jewellery, nuggets, and
  small non-ferrous objects are valid targets, as are ferrous ones. It operates at 19 kHz
  with three operating modes and gives audio alerts as well as on-screen 3D display.
- The trade-off is depth: GoldHunter operates within roughly the top 1 m, against tens of
  metres for the magnetometric instruments. It is the right tool for small shallow
  targets, and the 3D scanners are the right tool for large deep ones.
- The GoldHunter app is iOS only.

## Interpreting scan results

The instruments do not simply report "metal here" — the shape and colour of the recorded
signal indicates what kind of material was found, which is what allows a decision about
whether to dig.

- Ferromagnetic targets such as iron produce a signal that swings from positive through
  to negative, resolving as a clean sine shape.
- Non-ferromagnetic targets such as gold, silver, and aluminium produce a positive-only
  signal with a small dip at the peak.
- On a 3D ground scan, a predominantly positive red or yellow return is an indicator of
  non-ferromagnetic material.
- Scanning a detected target again from several directions and at different settings
  narrows down what it is before excavating.
